Il Libro d'Oro del Terzo Paradiso

Michelangelo Pistoletto, Il Libro d'Oro del Terzo Paradiso

The Golden Book of the Third Paradise

The ceramic work Terzo Paradiso has the same hourglass shape as the Segno Arte that I designed as a personal trademark in 1976. I engraved “The New Symbol of Infinity” on it, using a single line to trace three rings instead of the conventional two. The centre ring is dedicated to the Terzo Paradiso.
The first paradise is the land, completely regulated by the intelligence of nature, while the second one is the artificial paradise created by man. This second paradise is polluting the natural paradise to such an extent that life on the planet is being put at risk.
The Terzo Paradiso is the name of a new stage in which humanity finds a balance between the artificial world and the natural one. Terzo Paradiso is the inspirational legend of a responsible change of the society for which everyone must be involved.
Over the next few years 32 replicas of the Libro d’oro del Terzo Paradiso will be presented to those persons or institutions who have made distinguished commitments to the mission of the Terzo Paradiso

Michelangelo Pistoletto, together with the students of the Industrial Design degree programme of the Faculty of Architecture at the University of Genoa, has created a large ceramic work, the La Collana del Terzo Paradiso, installed on the façade of what was originally the church of the Convent of the Gianelline in Camogli and that, as of September 2008, hosts the Pier Luigi and Natalina Remotti Foundation for Contemporary Art in Camogli.
This work consists of 66 spheres that were assembled to create “The New Sign of Infinity”, symbol of the “Third Paradise”, made of three rings instead of the conventional two.

Vasi Specchio del Terzo Paradiso

To create this array of vases forming the Nuovo Segno d'Infinito - composed of three rings instead of the conventional two - Michelangelo Pistoletto has organised a collective design process to give shape to his great sculptural work. In actual fact, this design process resulted in the production of sixty vases moulded on rotating lathes, so that they were all different from each other but based on the same physical gestures. Each vase actually embodies the anonymous design of the lathe operators - the kind of design implicit in local craftsmanship - and young computer model-makers.

The Vasi Specchio del Terzo Paradiso by Michelangelo Pistoletto were prototyped in Albisola (Italy) on occasion of the travelling exhibition “Changing the world with a vase of flowers”, MUDAC-Museum of Design and Contemporary Applied Arts, Lausanne, 2011; Pierluigi and Natalina Remotti Foundation-City of Camogli, 2010-2011; Italian Cultural Institute of Madrid-Italian Embassy in Spain, 2010.
The Vasi Specchio del Terzo Paradiso were also presented at the following exhibitions: “Il Terzo Paradiso”, Fondazione Cittadellarte, Biella, 2009; “Independent Design Secession”, Triennale Design Museum, Milan, 2011.
